The Giver Chapters 1-4

Summary:

Jonas lives in a world where there is no fear, war, or pain, but everything about this place in not perfect. This kid is about to turn twelve years old, and on his community, this is a big deal. Becoming a Twelve, on his community, means that your job will be assigned and there is no possible way you can change it. Jonas feels apprehensive. He is not scared nor nervous, just apprehensive. His father is a nurturer of the community, which means he takes care of the new born babies about to be given to the families of this place. Jonas also has a mother and little sister, Lily, who is an Eight. Asher, Jonas best friend is also about to turn twelve and he is doing most of his volunteer hours with him. The volunteer hours are hours that all Elevens need to do in order to get a job; the thing is, do your volunteer hours where ever you want to work for the rest of your life. Jonas does the volunteer work every where so, he has no idea where he will be working. Now, that the Ceremony of Twelve is approaching, Jonas’s life is about to change forever.

“(…) you know the rules. Two children—one male, one female—to each family unit. It was written very clearly in the rules.” Pg. 8

I find it interesting how strict this community is with the rules and how they should be followed. The Committee regulates each and every single family of this community. Every rule, no matter how small, needs to be followed just how is asked to, otherwise there are going to be consequences. To keep the whole community fully controlled there needs to be a very specific system. My concern is if all rules have consequences, how is the committee controlling the small rules?

To sum up, Jonas is facing a very difficult situation, The Ceremony of Twelve. These four words may seem like a nightmare to most of the Elevens, but not so much to Jonas. He is apprehensive about it. Everything about his perfect community is going to change; all of his friends are not going to be friends with him anymore. His family, are going to change as well. Jonas’s world is going to take unexpected twist. After the Ceremony of Twelve, The Giver is going to be the only person Jonas is going trust.

The Giver

What this book will be about...

According to the short summaries, this book has, I can infer it is about a perfect place that hides dirty lies. The Giver features a dystopia place that seems all perfect, with no war, fear, or pain. But, as Jonas begins to grow up, he is about to find out all the nasty secrets this place is hiding. All this information will be given to Jonas through The Giver. The Giver, I believe, is the creator of this false place and he is eager to tell someone, anyone, the truth. This someone is Jonas and he must be responsible with all this powerful information he has now.

Dedicatory...

This book is dedicated to children. When Lois Lowry, the author, says, "For all the children to whom we entrust the future," on the dedication page, he is trying to express his trust on future generations. Lois wants kids to be interested in reading, because that is the key to success. The author wants to tell the world that, kids, are and always will be the future of this planet.

My Prediction...

This book is going to be a book full of adventure and mystery. The Giver will tell everything to Jonas, but as soon as all the truth is reveled, he will disappear forever. Shortly, after Jonas finds out the truth about the place he grew up in, he is going to tell everybody. There is a problem, no one will believe him, and so Jonas is the responsible to save the people.
